Rabies, EIA: Colorado on watch after horses tested positive

As the temperature outside increases, so it seems do the disease possibilities for your horse. Rabies and Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) hit two Colorado horses in late April. We know that vaccinating horses for rabies should be standard procedure, and you can reduce your horse's exposure to insect-spread EIA by providing protection via repellent, fly mask and fly sheet, as well as maintaining good stable hygiene. There is no cure for rabies or EIA, but the Coggins Test, routinely required by stables (including ours) and competitive horse events, identifies EIA carriers.
