FORT COLLINS, Colorado -- What do you get when you combine two gregarious geldings and a cute, rare draft pony? An awesome time at Jax Ranch and Home Authors Day! In spite of snow showers and frigid gray skies, 50 authors and mobs of enthusiastic shoppers turned out Saturday for the festivities, helping support the public library through book sales.

Jax_Author_Day_Dell Jax_Author_Day_Lily_FansWe were there with Winning Bet, my novel about a girl who must save her horse from the slaughterhouse, and we shared a table with Jenifer Morrisey, author of A Humbling Experience, her inside story about raising and living with rare Fell Ponies.

Once again, it amazed me that the horses connected instantly with the humans, and brought smiles to so many faces. Dell and Billy, both Morgans, loved the stream of treats that went their way, and Lily the Fell Pony performed tricks and gently accepted baby carrots from even the littlest of admirers! Thank you, Jax! (Click on the photos to enlarge them for a better view.)

Dear Karin,

Just wanted you to know how much I thoroughly enjoyed your book.  What a great story.  It brought back many fond memories of my children's 4-H days.  I have recommended it to my current 4-Hers and am purchasing copies for my daughter and sisters, all of whom are teachers, for their schools.

I saw on your website that there may be a chance for Accelerated Reader tests.  I'm going to talk to one of my sisters who is a school librarian (media specialist) in NJ.  She uses that program.

-- Debbie Dehn, 4-H leader, former teacher

Readers: You can help put Winning Bet on the Accelerated Reader list. If enough of you request it, Renaissance Learning will write an AR test for Winning Bet that any AR school can use, and anybody -- not just librarians -- can request! Just go to http://www.renlearn.com/ar/customercare/titlesuggestions.asp to make the request. Saint Joseph Catholic School book fair and Winning Bet teamed up for a winning event!Winning Bet, my young-adult horse novel, did well at the Saint Joseph Catholic School Book Fair last week, helping the school beat its goal of $6,500 in sales to benefit the school library. I helped the school write their own Accelerated Reader (AR) test for Winning Bet, which the students appreciated because they could get their horse fix, and earn AR points!

By the way, if your school does not have Accelerated Reader, reading test-practice software for practically every book ever written, you should get it. I helped kick-start our school’s literacy program, and Accelerated Reader made a huge difference in our student’s reading growth.

Just so you know, there is a way for everybody to get a Winning Bet AR test. Librarians, teachers, parents, students: If enough of you request it, Renaissance Learning will write an AR test for Winning Bet that everybody can use. 'Winning Bet' at the Old Firehouse

Old Fire House Books - new home of Winning Bet - Karin Livingston - Fort Collins - Colorado - Photo by Gregg DosterFORT COLLINS, Colorado -- Winning Bet, the novel exploring 15-year-old Emma Duncan’s struggle to win, solve a mystery, find romance, and save her horse from a slaughterhouse threat, hit the shelves of independent, locally-owned Old Firehouse Books last week.

If you’ve never been to the Old Firehouse, you should go, if just for the experience. The store is literally, in an old fire house. Think red brick facade, contrasting masonry details, large, sunny front window, lots of gleaming wood, shelvesCover - Winning Bet - by Karin Livingston - MyHoofprints up past your head, all the best-seller-new books, a ton of used books, AND books by local authors!

Add to that mix, the open, double-wide entrance into the tea house next door, where you can buy gourmet loose tea or sit down for a cuppa-and-a-snack with a good read. I stopped by on Sunday and the place was packed! You can find Winning Bet on the local author’s shelf, about mid-way toward the back of the store. (Click here for excerpt.) 'Winning Bet' pays tribute to Richard Shrake

I clicked on the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo site the other day, which by the way, is one of the best bargains you’ll ever find for useful horse knowledge, and ran into an old friend, Richard Shrake. Richard probably doesn’t know he’s an “old friend”, but I consider him one. I happily paid for and attended two of Richard’sOur gelding loves this Richard Shrake bit, which breaks softly in the mouthpiece. It is a legal western bit in 4-H. (Click photo to enlarge.)
Resistance Free™ clinics in Colorado and Wyoming, and I think I’ve been to every one of his presentations at the Horse Expo. (Just go. You’ll learn a ton.)

Our gelding, right, is wearing a Richard Shrake bit, which really softened his mouth. (Click on the photo to enlarge.) I see Richard is offering a bitting clinic Friday.

Anyway, Richard also probably doesn’t know that he influenced a lot of what happens in my teen-romantic-suspense-horse novel, Winning Bet. (Just buy it. You’ll love it.)

Here’s a Winning Bet excerpt that mentions, but does not completely give away, one of Richard’s best techniques. Here, it looks like Emma could also use Richard’s “Natural Movements Without Unnatural Aids” class Saturday. For the details on the technique below, you’ll have to ask Richard at the Expo. See you there!

Excerpt from Winning Bet:

If Bonnie blows the pattern, I’ll die.

A gust of wind scooped up a plastic bag and bounced it in a wild zigzag across the warm-up arena. Bonnie slammed to a halt, pushing her front

Baby-kissing Morgan should try politics

Baby-kissing Morgan Billy Blue, co-star of the novel, Winning Bet. (Click on photo to enlarge.)

Billy Blue, co-equine-star of my novel, Winning Bet, should get into politics. Going through the film footage of our Saturday book signing at Jax Ranch and Home in Loveland, Colorado, I could not believe the number of babies this horse kissed or tried to kiss. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, check out the video clip at the bottom right side of my Amazon author’s page where Billy, a registered Morgan, meets his new “sweety”.

In case you missed my subtle handling of their literary roles, Billy and his dam, Bonnie, are real horses featured in the fictitious setting of Winning Bet.

Shoppers’ response to the two horses “saying hello” in front of the Jax store was overwhelming. “They ought to do this every weekend,” said one man. I forget that not everyone gets to say hello to a friendly, limpid-eyed equine at the drop of a hat. People hunger for that magical equine touch. Watch the video. You’ll see what I mean.

Mr. Z attaches to face of book-signing celeb

The marquee advertising the Winning Bet book signing at Jax, Fort Collins, Colorado. (Click photo to enlarge.)

I looked in the mirror Saturday morning about 30 minutes before the Winning Bet book signing, and the zit bulged out, nicely reddish, above my upper lip. Nobody gets zits above their upper lip but me. It never fails. Give me a high-stakes appointment, and I will show up with Mr. Z.

A newbie book signing celeb, I really didn’t think to get nervous about the book signing until a party the night before when people came up to me and told me they saw my name in lights every night this week when they drove home. Jax Ranch and Home stuck me up on their billboard. Serious stuff, one’s name up there in giant letters for the world to see,
